It is one of the "Top Ten Public Cultural Facilities Projects in the Provincial Capital City" of Hainan Province. On December 15, 2025, the Hainan Science and Technology Museum announced that it would officially start a trial operation on December 18 and be open to the public for free. We designed the logo for the Hainan Science and Technology Museum. [Video](https://static.glabcms.stoyard.com/stoyard/gallery/20260205/g5knvi8efmd.mp4) [Video](https://static.glabcms.stoyard.com/stoyard/gallery/20260204/ed7n2ek9pcb.mp4) A Contemporary Proposition: Establishing Visual Landmarks for “The Stars and the Oceans” Against the backdrop of China’s national innovation-driven development strategy and the strategic initiative to build the Hainan Free Trade Port, Hainan is undergoing a profound transformation—expanding its horizons toward the open ocean and outer space. From the pioneering achievements of the South China Hybrid Rice Research Center to the deep-sea explorations undertaken by the manned submersible *Deep Sea Warrior*; from rocket launches at the Wenchang Space Launch Center to the pervasive digital infrastructure powering Hainan’s smart island initiatives—a comprehensive vision of a technology-empowered province is steadily taking shape along the southern coast of China. Within this historic transformation, the Hainan Science and Technology Museum serves not only as the capstone provincial-level science communication facility—addressing a long-standing institutional gap—but also as a symbolic landmark embodying the technological capabilities and cultural soft power of the Hainan Free Trade Port. Its visual identity transcends mere graphic design: it functions as a cultural emblem that synthesizes strategic intent, regional ethos, and forward-looking aspirations. Critically, it fulfills three core communicative mandates—engaging the public, articulating shared values, and cultivating a distinctive institutional image. This project was conceived precisely in response to such a high-level, contextually grounded contemporary proposition. [Video](https://static.glabcms.stoyard.com/stoyard/gallery/20260213/0sa5ce8kiczd.mp4) Highlighting the Dialogue between Tradition and Revelation: The Relationship Between Continuity and Enlightenment. At the top of the dynamic trajectory, two stars gracefully converge, shining brightly. They are the "spiritual peak" of the entire logo: symbolizing the encounter of "innovation" and "future": marking the perfect closed loop of scientific exploration from inspiration to realization of value. It metaphorically represents the continuation of the spirit of scientists: one star represents the foundation and guidance of the older generation of scientists (like a lighthouse), and the other star implies the vitality and inheritance of the younger generation of explorers (like a new star), their interplay forming an intangible spiritual lineage. Explaining the closed loop of scientific discoveries: Double stars can also be regarded as "discovery" and "inspiration". Science begins with the "discovery" of phenomena and ends with the "inspiration" of laws, and it also stimulates new "discoveries". The resonance and cycle between these two elements precisely interpret the core mission of the science museum - "Let imagination meet the future" - on the scientific chain, every observation is the starting point of a new journey. Elevation of Concepts: The Transformation from "Architectural Form" to "Spiritual Core" After multiple rounds of deliberation, the core theme "Starry Sea · In Hainan · Let Imagination Meet the Future" was ultimately established. Under this theme, we have derived a trinity of specific design principles as the guiding principles throughout the creative process: Local Characteristics (Stars and Oceans): Rooted in the unique genes of Hainan. This is not only a tropical island and the vast South China Sea in a geographical sense, but also the "Spirit of Venturing into the Sea" in cultural terms, an open-minded attitude towards the world, and a "Dream Exploration" field at the forefront of national major strategies such as aerospace and deep-sea exploration. Exhibition and Education Connotation (Five Directions of Strength): The logo should transcend the surface appearance of the building and reflect the core function of the science and technology museum as a public education platform. It should metaphorically represent exploration, inspiration, interaction and growth, echoing the deep logic of the exhibition and education project of "understanding science, recognizing Hainan, and communicating with the world". Architectural Feature (Spiral Ascending): The logo should form a shape and spirit correspondence with the architectural language of "Spiral Blue Sea". This correspondence is not only a borrowing of form but also a visual resonance with the philosophical concepts of "time flow", "life growth", and "future dialogue" embodied in the architecture. The Foundation of Rationality: Design Anchors Based on Systematic Research Facing the complex proposition of "Technology · Nature · Future", the team conducted a classified analysis of the logos of 25 representative science and technology museums in China, and categorized them into five types: abstract geometric, architectural derivative, regional integration, text and graphics, and dynamic future. Data analysis shows that over 40% of the logos draw inspiration from architectural forms, which points out the first key direction for us: the "Spiral Blue Sea" building designed by Ma Yansong's team for the Hainan Science and Technology Museum is already a work of art that embodies the philosophy of nature and a sense of the future. The logo design should engage in a dialogue with it. Meanwhile, the research has revealed four major trends in the current design of science and technology museum signs: expression of architectural features, application of dynamic lines, simple geometric composition, and systematic extension. This further solidifies our strategy: to take the unique spiral form of the building as the genetic code, integrate regional cultural elements, and infuse a strong sense of movement and futurism, ensuring that the signs not only carry profound connotations but also possess extremely high recognition and adaptability for dissemination. Conclusion: From Visual Symbols to Cultural Landmarks The visual identity system design project of Hainan Science and Technology Museum is a profound practice that creatively integrates macro strategies, local culture, architectural philosophy and the mission of public education. It began with rational research and analysis, and culminated in emotional elevation and refinement. The final logo is not merely a widely applicable graphic, but also a narrative-rich visual declaration. It seems to grow from the waves of the South China Sea and the stars of Hainan Island, carrying the rhythm of nature and the pulse of the times, gently yet firmly pointing towards the future. We are deeply honored to be able to contribute with our design skills to the creation of this cultural landmark of the era. We look forward to this symbol, which combines the local charm and cosmic contemplation, becoming a prominent lighthouse that guides the public, especially the younger generation, into the realm of science and embraces the infinite possibilities. On the banks of the South China Sea, it will continue to tell the eternal story about exploration, imagination and the future.
