Through communication and mutual learning through Chinese characters over thousands of years of cultural history, the three countries have built up a profound East Asian cultural foundation and promoted the development of friendly relations. Chinese characters are not only a common language tool of China, Japan and South Korea, but also a natural bond of cultural exchanges among the three countries. The Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat is an international organization established with the approval of the governments of the People's Republic of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea. As an international institution serving the three countries, the Secretariat has asked the people of the three countries to select a representative Chinese character suitable for the trilateral spirit in 2023 to express the hope for trilateral cooperation in the coming year.
